How Do I Adjust The Pressure Relief Valve?

Jun 15, 2025

The method of adjusting the pressure relief valve is as follows

1. Preparation
Ensure safety: Before adjustment, ensure that the equipment is in a safe state, turn off the power supply of relevant valves or equipment (such as water pumps, engines, etc.), and wait for the equipment to cool down.
Tool preparation: Prepare wrenches, screwdrivers, pressure gauges and other tools.
Understand the parameters: Consult the equipment manual to clarify the set pressure range and adjustment requirements of the pressure relief valve.
2. Adjustment steps
Locate the pressure relief valve: Depending on the type of equipment, the pressure relief valve may be located near the turbocharger (automobile), the water outlet of the water pump (fire protection system) or on the pipeline (industrial system).
Adjust the adjustment screw
Clockwise rotation: increase the opening pressure.
Counterclockwise rotation: reduce the opening pressure.
Gradually adjust: The rotation amplitude should not be too large each time (1/4 turn is recommended), and the pressure needs to be retested after adjustment.
Cooperate with other components
Angle needle valve: adjust the pressure relief speed. The larger the opening, the slower the pressure relief. It is generally recommended to open to half a turn.
Locking nut: Tighten after adjustment to prevent pressure drift.
Red angle valve (some models): used to control the pressure relief speed, and the opening adjustment is similar to that of the angle needle valve.
3. Test and verification
Start the equipment: start the water pump, engine and other equipment after adjustment, and observe the pressure gauge reading.
Check the pressure relief
If the pressure exceeds the set value and is still not relieved, turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise.
If the pressure is lower than the set value, the pressure is relieved, and the adjustment screw needs to be turned clockwise.
Stabilize the pressure: fine-tune the angle needle valve or red angle valve to stabilize the pressure within the set range.
Repeat verification: Recheck the pressure after shutting down the equipment to confirm that the adjustment is effective.
4. Special type adjustment points
Spring-type safety pressure relief valve: change the opening pressure by adjusting the spring preload, turn the nut clockwise to increase the pressure, and counterclockwise to reduce the pressure.
Heavy hammer safety pressure relief valve: adjust the position or weight of the heavy hammer, increase the pressure away from the fulcrum, and reduce the pressure close to the fulcrum.
Pilot safety pressure relief valve: adjust the pilot valve spring preload or control pressure, turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase the pressure, and counterclockwise to reduce the pressure.
V. Precautions
Simulated working conditions: When adjusting, the actual medium conditions (such as temperature and medium type) should be simulated as much as possible to ensure the accuracy of the opening pressure.
Prevent damage: Before adjustment, the valve inlet pressure needs to be reduced to less than 90% of the opening pressure to avoid damage to the sealing surface.
Professional assistance: If you are not sure how to adjust, it is recommended to consult a professional technician or go to a repair shop for operation.
VI. Application scenario examples
Automobile pressure relief valve: Adjust the turbocharger pressure to ensure engine power response and fuel efficiency.
Fire water system: Adjust the pressure of the pressure relief valve to protect pipelines and equipment from overpressure damage.
Industrial pipeline: Adjust the pressure of the pressure relief valve to prevent medium leakage or equipment damage.
