Versatility in Applications

One of the key advancements in industrial ball valves is their increased versatility. These valves are now designed to handle a diverse range of applications, from general-purpose use to specialized industries such as petrochemicals, oil and gas, water treatment, and more. Their adaptability makes them a go-to solution for various industrial fluid control needs.

Advantages of Ball Valves

High efficiency
Due to the size of the opening in the ball, ball valves are considered high recovery valves since they have a low-pressure drop and high flow capacity. There is little turbulence or resistance to fluid flow when the valve is fully open.

Convenient usage
As a result of their simple quarter-turn (90-degree) operation, ball valves are efficient and convenient to use. As the valve is relatively lightweight and small, it is also easy to install and remove.

Low maintenance

Compared to other types of valves, ball valves are simple and require less maintenance. Because the ball valve stem rotates without axial movement, the packing seal on the valve stem does not easily wear or fail. Ball valves are easy to disassemble and repair, and worn parts can be easily replaced.

Cost-efficient

The cost of ball valves is affordable compared to more complex valve types. Also, as they have low maintenance needs, they’re cheaper to maintain.implement in the long term.

Robust

Ball valves are among the most robust valve types because of their ability to withstand high pressures. Their wide range of materials enables them to be used in a variety of environments across a variety of industries.

Parts of Ball Valve

Valve stem (A): The valve stem connects the actuator (e.g., handle or actuator) to the ball.

O-rings (B): O-rings in a ball valve are circular seals made from materials like rubber. They prevent leaks by creating a tight seal between parts, such as around the stem or seats.

Housing (C): The housing supports all the valve's internal components and protects them from application and environmental conditions. The housing usually has openings for connecting pipes, known as inlet and outlet ports. The housing is made of strong and durable materials like brass, stainless steel, or PVC.

Ball (D): The ball has a hole through which fluid can flow when the valve opens. This hole aligns with the valve's path, letting fluid pass through. When the bore is turned perpendicular to the flow, it stops the fluid from passing through.

Seat (E): The seat supports and seals the ball component. Ball valves usually feature two seats. When the valve is closed, these seats create a tight seal around the ball. The upstream seat seals against the pressure of the incoming fluid, while the downstream seat prevents any leakage from escaping into the atmosphere.

Application Fields of Ball Valves

Oil and Gas Industry

In this industry, ball valves can be used to cut off and control the transportation of oil and gas, and can maintain stable performance in harsh environments such as oil field exploitation. Even in high temperature and high pressure environments, ball valves will not be seriously affected.

Water Supply and Treatment Industry

Ball valves can be used in systems related to water supply and factory water treatment, mainly to control the pass and cut-off of water flow, to ensure the stability of water supply and the efficiency of water treatment. They are commonly used in household water supply pipes, municipal water supply systems, and industrial water treatment and wastewater treatment systems.

Food and Beverage Industry

In the food and beverage industry, the requirements for hygiene and cleanliness are relatively high, because the medium to be transmitted must ensure hygiene and safety. In the selection of valves, sanitary ball valves naturally meet the standards, and they can be used in the transmission systems of beverages, dairy products, etc.

Marine Industry

Seawater contains many highly corrosive substances, and the fuel delivery system of ships also requires valves with high corrosion resistance requirements. Ball valves with excellent corrosion resistance are very suitable for operation in seawater transmission systems and fuel delivery systems. They can timely control the transmission and cut-off of seawater and fuel without being easily corroded.

Full Port Ball Valves
A full port ball valve has a fuller ball and a large valve body. With a ball size the same as the pipeline, it causes very little friction and facilitates an unrestricted flow of materials.

Standard Port Valves
Standard port valves are the most common type of valves that are inexpensive compared to other valves. The valve is smaller compared to the full port type and hence has a small ball. These valves are used to restrict the flow of materials through the pipeline. The flow will typically be smaller than the pipe size.

The V Port Ball Valves
As the name indicates, a V port ball valve has a V-shaped seat. Due to this unique shape, these valves cannot be used just about anywhere. These valves are used for more secure operations where the flow can easily be closed and opened in different directions. The small end of the V will open first to stabilise and control the flow.

Trunnion Ball Valves
The trunnion ball valve has a different mechanism of attaching itself to the pipeline. It anchors the valve at the bottom and top of the pipeline. These are larger and higher-intensity valves used for high-pressure applications. It does not fit all types of projects.

Manually Operated Valves
Manually operated valves can be closed easily than other types of valves. It can be an advantage at times but has potential risk in terms of water hammer. These valves will have an actuator and a positioner. An actuator is a motor-operated or pneumatic device that will automatically turn off/on the flow control. The positioner will turn the control signal to the actuator position.

FAQ

Q: Can a ball valve be partially open?

A: A ball valve is not recommended for throttling as it can cause uneven wear, vibration, and noise. Use characterized ball valves for throttling.

Q: Where is a ball valve used?

A: Ball valves are used in pipelines for on/off control in industries, residential plumbing, and irrigation systems due to their quick operation and tight sealing.

Q: Can a ball valve control flow?

A: While a ball valve can control flow, it is not ideal for precise flow regulation. It is best suited for applications requiring full open or closed positions.

Q: Why do you need a ball valve?

A: Ball valves are needed for their reliable, quick shut-off capabilities, minimal pressure drop, and durability, making them ideal for various fluid control applications.

Q: Which is better, brass or plastic ball valves?

A: Brass ball valves are more durable and heat-resistant, suitable for high-pressure and temperature applications. Plastic valves are corrosion-resistant and lightweight, ideal for chemical exposure.

Q: When is a ball valve open?

A: A ball valve opens when the handle is in line with the pipe and closes when it is perpendicular to the pipe. It only needs to be rotated 90 degrees.

Q: Can ball valves fail?

A: Yes, a ball valve can fail. Common failure types are a damaged seal (valve won't seal 100%) or debris entering the valve (valve won't move).

Q: What can a ball valve be used for?

A: A typical ball valve functions as a shut-off valve. Use a characterized ball valve, such as a v-port ball valve, for precise flow control.
